How to hang a pendant light without an electrician: plug-in cords, hooks and swag

The best spot for a pendant is rarely where the ceiling point is. Over a bedside, in a reading corner, above a desk, in a rented flat where the ceiling must stay untouched: none of these need an electrician. A plug-in cord set and a hook let you hang a pendant from any ceiling and switch it on at the wall. Here is how to do it neatly and safely, and how to get the height right.
What you need
- A plug-in cord set. A lamp socket (E27 is the common European size; E14 for small bulbs), 3–5 m of fabric-covered cable, an inline switch and a plug. Choose one with a strain-relief grip at the socket so the shade's weight hangs on the cable jacket, not on the wires.
- A ceiling hook. Screw hook with a wall plug for concrete or brick; a toggle or spring anchor for plasterboard; a small cup hook for the wall if you swag the cable.
- A drill with a masonry bit for concrete ceilings, which is what most Yerevan flats have.
- The shade and an LED bulb.
1. Choose the spot and the height
Decide where the shade should hang before you drill. The rules of thumb: over a dining table, the bottom of the shade 70–85 cm above the table top; over a bedside table, 50–70 cm above it; in a corner or over a chair, the bottom of the shade around 150–170 cm from the floor so nobody walks into it. Mark the point on the ceiling with a pencil. Our pendant sizing guide covers diameter and proportion, and the kitchen island guide spacing for a row of pendants.
2. Fix the hook
Handmade paper and fibre shades are light, often a few hundred grams, but the hook should still hold a few kilograms with margin. In a concrete ceiling, drill a hole with a masonry bit, tap in a plastic wall plug and screw in the hook. In plasterboard, use a toggle or spring anchor rated for the weight, or find a joist with a stud finder and screw into it. In wood, a screw hook goes straight in. Give the hook a firm pull before hanging anything on it.
3. Hang and swag the cable
Thread the socket end through the shade following the shade's own fitting, then hang the cable over the hook at the height you marked. Most cord sets come with a cable grip or a loop for this; if yours does not, tie a loose knot above the hook so the weight sits on the knot, never on the socket. From the hook, run the cable to the wall and down to the socket. For a clean look, add one or two small cup hooks along the ceiling or at the top of the wall and let the cable fall in a straight vertical line, or let it hang in a gentle curve, the classic swag. Fabric cable in a colour that matches the wall almost disappears; a contrasting cable becomes part of the design.
4. Tidy the cord
Where the cable runs down the wall, hold it with adhesive cable clips or a slim cable channel painted to match. Keep the inline switch at a height you can reach from the bed or chair. A smart plug at the wall socket turns the pendant into a lamp you can dim or schedule, and puts it on the same control as the rest of the room.
Bulbs and safety
Use an LED bulb only, in warm white (2700–3000 K), within the wattage marked on the socket. LEDs stay cool, which is what makes paper and fabric shades safe at close range. Keep the cable away from heaters and out of walkways, do not run it under a rug, and unplug the lamp before changing the bulb. Our bulb and safety guide has the details for papier-mâché shades.

Converting later
If you later want the pendant hardwired, the same shade can be moved to a ceiling point by an electrician: the socket is replaced with a ceiling rose and the plug and switch removed. For renters, the reverse is the point: when you move out, unscrew the hook, fill one small hole, and take the lamp with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hang a pendant light without wiring?
Yes. A plug-in cord set with a socket, cable, inline switch and plug, plus a hook in the ceiling, lets you hang a pendant anywhere and plug it into a wall socket. No electrician is needed.
How high should a plug-in pendant hang?
Over a dining table, the bottom of the shade 70–85 cm above the table; over a bedside table, 50–70 cm above it; in a corner or over a chair, around 150–170 cm from the floor.
What hook do I use for a pendant in a concrete ceiling?
A screw hook in a plastic wall plug, set in a hole drilled with a masonry bit. In plasterboard use a toggle or spring anchor rated for the weight, or screw into a joist.
How do I hide the cord of a plug-in pendant?
Run it from the hook to the wall in a straight line or a gentle swag, then down the wall held by adhesive clips or a slim painted cable channel. A fabric cable in the wall colour almost disappears.
Which bulb is safe in a plug-in paper pendant?
An LED bulb in warm white, within the wattage marked on the socket. LEDs stay cool, which is what makes paper and fabric shades safe. Never use halogen or incandescent bulbs.
Can a plug-in pendant be hardwired later?
Yes. An electrician can move the same shade to a ceiling point by fitting a ceiling rose in place of the socket and removing the plug and switch.
