How a papier-mâché pendant lamp is made

Every pendant lamp we make starts as nothing more than torn paper and a bowl of paste. What turns it into a warm, sculptural light is time and a lot of hands-on work.

1. Building the form

We begin with a mold — often something as simple as a balloon or a shaped base — that gives the lamp its silhouette. This is the moment the piece's character is decided: a soft dome, a tall bell, a wide brim. Because each form is set by hand, no two are ever perfectly identical, and that's the point.

2. Layering the papier-mâché

Once the papier-mâché paste is ready, we begin layering it onto the form, one piece at a time. Between each layer the piece has to dry fully, so a lamp isn't the work of an afternoon — it's built up slowly over days. The layering is what gives papier-mâché its surprising strength and its gentle, textured surface.

The small imperfections aren't flaws to hide — they're the signature of something made by a person, not a machine.

3. Shaping the details

Once the body holds its shape, we refine the edges, trim the rim, and add any texture or relief the design calls for. This is slow, quiet work — the difference between a rough shell and a finished object lives in these final passes.

4. Finishing & color

The piece is sealed and finished in natural, earthy tones that let the material speak — terracotta, clay, warm neutrals. We leave the natural finish untouched, allowing the handmade surface to show through.

5. Wiring the light

Finally, the lamp is fitted for a bulb. We recommend LED bulbs, as they stay cool and are gentle on paper-based shades. Once assembled, the pendant is ready to hang, casting a soft, warm glow that mass-produced lighting simply can't match.

The result is a piece that carries the marks of the hands that made it: one of a kind, slightly imperfect, and full of warmth. Most of our designs can also be made to order in your preferred size and color.
