Handmade gifts from Armenia: what to bring home from Yerevan

Handmade papier-mâché bowls in clay red, pink and sand tones on a linen cloth — a handmade gift from Yerevan

Whether you are flying home from Yerevan with a little space left in your suitcase, visiting family from the diaspora, or looking for a present for someone who lives in Armenia, the question is the same: what is worth bringing back? Here is our honest guide to handmade gifts from Armenia — what makes a good one, how to get it home safely, and a few pieces from our own studio that people choose again and again.

What makes a good gift from Armenia?

The best Armenian souvenirs share three qualities. They are made by hand, so the gift carries a trace of the person who made it rather than a factory stamp. They use local materials and local skills — the things Armenia has always been good at. And they are actually used once they arrive, instead of disappearing into a drawer.

If you are wondering what to buy in Yerevan, the classic categories are a good place to start. The open-air Vernissage market is famous for its stalls of crafts; hand-knotted carpets and rugs have centuries of tradition behind them; ceramics, carved apricot-wood pieces, silver and textiles all make thoughtful gifts. Look for makers who can tell you how a piece was made, and choose something the recipient will live with.

A useful rule of thumb: decide early whether you want something practical (a bowl, a set of coasters, a lamp that will be switched on every evening) or something purely decorative (an object for a shelf). Practical gifts get noticed every day. Decorative ones work best when you know the recipient's home and taste.

Why handmade décor and lighting travel well

Home décor is one of the most underrated Armenian gift ideas. A bowl or a lamp is personal without being too personal, it suits almost any age, and it keeps reminding someone of the trip — or of you — every time they see it.

It is also more travel-friendly than it looks. Papier-mâché is remarkably light, so even a generous bowl adds very little to your luggage. Cast cement pieces are dense and sturdy and only need good padding. And if you would rather not carry anything at all, we ship worldwide from Yerevan: tell us where the piece is going and we will send you a shipping quote before you order. That makes it easy to send a gift to family abroad, or for someone in the diaspora to order a gift for a relative in Armenia.

Handmade gift ideas from our Yerevan studio

Every piece below is made to order by hand in Yerevan, so no two are exactly alike — which is rather the point of a gift.

Cement Table Lamp

7.5 × 9.5 cm · hand-cast cement · 8,000 AMD

A small cast cement cylinder with a brushed brass band at the base and an exposed Edison bulb. It is surprisingly heavy in the hand and made for a desk, a shelf or a windowsill. Compact enough to tuck into a suitcase, and a gift that gets switched on every evening.

Glowing Mushroom Lamp

28 × 30 cm · hand-shaped papier-mâché · 10,000 AMD

A rounded cap on a soft column, shaped entirely by hand in papier-mâché with a raw, sandy surface. The whole form glows from within instead of casting a beam — a quiet light for a bedside table. A lovely housewarming gift, and lighter than its size suggests.

Raffia Pendant Light

17 × 35 cm · natural raffia over a hand-formed frame · 10,000 AMD

A wide dome wrapped in natural raffia, so light escapes through the weave as well as the opening. Lit at night it reads as a lantern rather than a shade. A generous gift for someone furnishing a new home — and one we can ship directly to them.

Papier-mâché Bowls

12 × 8 cm · hand-shaped papier-mâché · 3,000–7,000 AMD

Small, shallow bowls pressed by hand and tinted in soft clay pinks, reds and greys, with rims left deliberately uneven. Good for keys, rings, or nothing at all. They weigh almost nothing, which makes them the easiest Armenian souvenir to fly home with.

Concrete Coasters

Set of 4 · hand-cast cement · 5,000 AMD

Coasters in a warm terracotta mix flecked with pale aggregate, each poured separately so the speckling never repeats. Heavy enough to stay where you put them and sealed against rings. A practical gift for coffee lovers and anyone who hosts.

Ribbed Cement Vase and Bowl

18 × 10 cm · hand-cast cement · 4,000 / 8,000 AMD

A fluted vase and a shallow companion bowl, both cast in cement and tinted a dusty blush. The ribbing catches raking light and throws fine vertical shadows. Best suited to dried arrangements — a sprig of dried flowers tucked inside makes a gift that needs no wrapping.

Woven Bowls

Cord and beadwork over a shaped base · 5,000 AMD each

Small bowls wrapped in cord and trimmed with beadwork in deep green, rust and cream. Each one is finished by hand, so the stitch spacing varies. Sold individually — choose a colour for the person you have in mind.

Ordering a custom piece as a gift

If none of these is quite right, ask. Because everything is made to order, we can often adjust the colour or size of a piece to suit a particular room or person. Message us with what you have in mind; we will tell you what is possible and share a realistic timeline before you commit, so you can plan around a birthday, a wedding or a flight home.

Practical notes: shipping, customs and care

Shipping. We ship worldwide from Yerevan. Send us the destination and we will reply with a quote.

Customs. Any customs or import duties in the destination country are paid by the buyer, so it is worth checking your local rules before ordering a larger piece.

Care. Papier-mâché must stay dry — dust it with a soft brush and keep it away from water. Cement is sturdier but still prefers not to sit in standing water. For lamps, always use LED bulbs, which stay cool. Our care guide has the details, and it is worth passing on with the gift.
